An Elevation Certificate is typically used to certify that the piece of property is or is not lying in a flood zone. There usually is a substantial cost savings on home owners insurance rates if their property is proven to be outside of a FEMA designated Flood Zone. Elevation Certificates are sometimes required at closing during the purchase of a new home, a lot of times the lending banks will require an Elevation Certificate so that the insurance company can insure the property against the possibility of a flood.
